Tips to Save Energy for your Home

We know that owning a home adds up with costs. Between your bills and maintenance costs, it can be stressful! Here are some easy ways to save energy and money in the long run!

  1. Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
  2. Use LED lighting, which consumes 80-85% less energy than incandescent lights, and lasts 20-25 times longer Using motion sensors will limit the use of your lighting when the room is not in use, extending the life of the light bulb, thus there is less of a need to change them out and spend money on replacing them.
  3. Air dry dishes as opposed to always using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.
  4. Unplug your phone’s charger when not in use. Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use as well.
  5. Plug home electronics into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use (Even if the electronic has a standby mode – it can still use several watts of power. Turning the power strip off eliminates this).
  6. Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120°F.
  7. Take short showers instead of baths.
  8. Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
  9. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR® products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  10. Seal air leaks – this can result in up to 30% of energy savings.
