Tips to Save Energy for your Business
Want to know a great way to save on your company’s bottom line? Save energy! Energy bills may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to a main cost for a business, but they surely add up. Lighting, heating, cooling, electricity, and energy costs all affect how much you spend each month. Instead of spending more than is necessary, follow these tips to be energy-efficient.
- Use natural light to your advantage. The benefit of many commercial spaces is the number of windows. Use natural light from the windows whenever possible to keep the lighting costs down.
- Tune up your HVAC system. Your heating and cooling system accounts for a good portion of your energy bills, so it is important that you are using energy-efficient models and maintain yearly tune ups on your equipment.
- Turn off office equipment when not in use. There is a good chance the majority of your business’s office equipment runs off electricity. Computers, printers, televisions, and charging stations all consume electricity around the clock. Before leaving for the night, turn off all computers and electrical devices that are not essential to your business. If possible, turn off any and all surge protectors.
- Install motion sensors. One of the leading causes of wasted electricity amongst small businesses is lighting in unused areas. If you have a back office, employee bathrooms, or another part of your business that goes unused for long periods of time, consider installing light motion sensors. Doing so will reduce electricity consumption and ultimately help save money on your bottom line.
- Switch to natural gas. Switching to efficient, clean natural gas can help you save money—especially during the cold winter months.
- Switch to LED lighting. This can save you a significant amount on your electricity bills since LED lighting uses less energy and has to be replaced less often.
- Add humidity in the winter and dehumidification in the summer. Learn more about humidification control from the experts at Berkshire Mechanical.
- Install a “smart” programmable thermostat so that the temperature of your building when it is not in use during non-business hours will save you energy and money.
